Environmental factors shape the distribution of common dolphins in Portugal

Martins, M. P., M.Fernandez, A. Marçalo, N.Oliveira, and T. A.Marques. (2026). Seasonal and Interannual Variation of Common Dolphin, Delphinus delphis, Density in Portuguese Waters. Marine Mammal Science 42, no. 2: e70160. (2026). https://doi.org/10.1111/mms.70160

This study examined how different environmental variables affect the distribution and density of common dolphins along the Portuguese coast. Our Researcher Miguel Martins identified seasonal patterns and year-to-year variations, showing that factors such as ocean productivity and environmental conditions play a key role in the presence of this species.

The findings contribute to a better understanding of common dolphin ecology and highlight the importance of integrating environmental factors into conservation strategies.

We applaud Miguel and his co-authors for their work!
