Never before has the know-how on data analysis been so important!
In this information world, data is ever increasing in both, size and complexity, and the use of coding languages has become an essential tool when we want to ask the data some questions. In this workshop, we will be taking you along for a ride into the world of data analysis using RStudio, making sure you develop the basic skills that enable you to overcome the initial difficulties this coding language presents for brand-new users. In short, you will be learning the basic language, useful operations, how to import, curate, and explore your data, and how to become familiar with basic data analysis with descriptive statistics and data visualization tools. By the end of this workshop, you will be able to start your own journey in RStudio and data analysis!
Workshop Description
This workshop will cover the very basics of using RStudio, specifically delving into:
1. What is R and why is it useful? – Here you will familiarize yourself with the RStudio interface, learn the basics of programming, what different types of data you can use in R, and how to use them.
2. Using R for data analysis. – What is data analysis and how do you perform it? You will learn how to import and curate your data, performing summary statistics and some basic regressions.
3. Visualization is key! – The best way to get a feel of your data is to visualize it. You will learn how to explore your data using basic plot functions in R.
4. Useful packages save us time! – It is important to know the very basics, but you should also be aware of any packages that can save you time and enable you to get more comprehensive analyses out of your data. Some examples will include the very basics of ggplot2, summary statistics packages, and other visualization and analysis packages.
Objectives
By the end of this workshop, you should be able to:
- Understand the basic R language and workspace.
- Import, standardize, and curate your data.
- Visualize and perform basic descriptive statistics on your data.
- Perform simple statistical analyses on your data.
Audience
Undergraduate (Bachelor) and postgraduate (Master and PhD) students and researchers with little and no experience using R software, who wish to learn the basics to begin data analysis and visualization. No specific background is required, and while some examples may refer to biological data, students are encouraged to bring their own data to work on. No previous experience in R is required.
Tutor
Dr. Francisco Borges holds a PhD in Biology, Marine Biology and Aquaculture, by the University of Lisbon and focuses on the use of statistics and ecological modelling to study species and ecosystem relationships, as well as the potential impacts of climate change on the marine environment.
