Numerous species of cetaceans are known to engage in epimeletic (caregiving) behavior towards injured or distressed conspecifics. On 11 November 2021, a field survey was conducted by the Associação para a Investigação do Meio Marinho (AIMM) research team off the south coast of mainland Portugal. During one sighting, an adult dolphin was observed carrying a deceased calf. The behavior of that individual and the group was continuously monitored during the sighting, using digital cameras, underwater camera and a drone.
